Lab Test - The Weather

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

This one seems long overdue. People make all kinds of assumptions about what does and doesn’t happen in the rain, but I’ve never seen anyone test them — until now. At the end of the article, you’ll find a handy chart which summarizes the findings for easy reference.

Lab Test: The Rookie Wall

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Like so many of my ideas, talk and fear of the Rookie Wall was all over the forum at FantasySharks.com, and it seemed like an important trend to find if it exists. Turns out it does!

Due Diligence on the Runningback By Committee

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

In a second look at the RBBC, I join forces with Greg Kellogg to debunk the idea that the days of the star runningback are on the decline.

Lab Test: Strength of Schedule

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Lab Test - The Runningback By Committee

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Is the Runningback Committee really on the rise, or are there just more doom-sayers who don’t know what they’re talking about? Is Mike Shanahan the Sith Lord of the NFL? Read on to find out just what has been going on in NFL backfields over the years, and whether Marion Barber, Willie Parker, Selvin Young, and others should be worried.

Lab Test, The Snake Draft

Monday, May 26th, 2008

This one was a doozy. I ran more than half a billion simulated draft picks to test the Traditional Snake Draft, Modified Snakes, and randomized drafts to measure their bias, and see if there was a better way. The results were encouraging, but the Holy Grail is still out there.

The 3rd Year Wideout Breakout

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Its draft time, which means the mathemagical voodoo is in high gear. Hopefully just in time for your draft, let’s take a look at the “3rd Year Wide Receiver Breakout Hypothesis” in this second installment of the stat lab. This is the idea that wideouts are generally primed for success after two years of pro experience under their belt due to comfort, rapport, pro-grade performance enhancers, whatever. For fantasy purposes, we’re looking for guys who bust out of the far end of the depth chart into at least fantasy relevance along with breakout time from their rookie season.
